My wife participates every year in an annual charity event held in our community. People and companies donate goods and services that are then sold via both a silent auction and a live auction. It started off on a small scale. Most of the donated items items were unwanted Christmas presents, unneeded household items, and the like. Over the years it has grown into a major event, with merchandise and services worth thousands of dollars now being donated (a .223 carbine from the local ranch supply store, home remodeling services, spa visits, etc.)
As the auction has become bigger and bigger, so has the social hoopla surrounding it. This year, for example, we went to a pre-party Friday night, another pre-party before the auction Saturday afternoon, the auction itself Saturday night (free beer and wine to get the bidders liquored up), and a golf tournament Sunday morning.
Lots of money was raised for worthy causes, a good time was had by all, and I didn't have to buy a drink all weekend.
But it was one damn long weekend...
