Happy Birthday, Texas

Today is the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The Republic of Texas existed as an independent sovereign country, a distinction no other U.S. state can claim, from 2 March 1836 until Texas annexed the rest of the United States in 1845.

When a government has ceased to protect the lives, liberty and property of the people, from whom its legitimate powers are derived, and for the advancement of whose happiness it was instituted, and so far from being a guarantee for the enjoyment of those inestimable and inalienable rights, becomes an instrument in the hands of evil rulers for their oppression.

The above is the opening phrase of the Declaration. It's as relevant today as it was in 1836.

(Trivia: a 175th anniversary is known as, among other terms, a Dodransbicentennial or a Septaquintaquinquecentennial.)

I was thinking of the sesquicentennial last weekend. I had just moved to Texas the year before and couldn't figure out why they marketed the occasion with such a ridiculously long and seldom heard word, when '150th Anniversary' seemed so much simpler. I remember there was every manner of commemorative item brandished with 'Sesquicentennial'. Takes up a lot of space on a Franklin Mint plate.
