I graduated from high school in 1969. That makes me an expert on the way things were 'back in the day.'
I tend to overuse this phrase, but the following is certainly Sad but True...
Sigh...
Quantitative Easing.

Too true.
This was on my list of things to post. My dad often speaks of keeping his shotgun in his locker for the trap club back in his high school days.
Your scenario 2 beought back old memeories. Back in 1950, a high school classmate ad I got into a fist fight in the alley behind the town's lumber yard. After a couple of minutes of doing little to no damage to each other, we called it off. That guy and I were fast friends from there on, until he went into the Marines and I to the Navy. We stayed close friends until the day he died about 20 years or so ago.

WSF - ain't it, though...
Bear - I didn't keep my rife in my locker, but it was often in the gun rack in the back window of my truck.
Scottiebill - different times...
Oh hell yes... sigh Gun rack in the truck, and the truck not even locked!
My dad was a school principal from the mid-1950's through the late 80's. He carried his paddle in his back pocket and used it often. I can't tell you how many times his ex-students came by our house through the years to visit or when they needed help. They told stories of how my dad used that paddle on them. They had lots of love and respect for my dad. And my dad loved them.
One of the best stories was when several of his high school students skipped school. He went looking for them and eventually found them in a nearby town in the local bar/pool hall. They said Dad walked in without saying a word. Picked up a cue stick and promptly ran the table. He put the stick down and said, "I'll see you boys in school on Monday."
